Philippe Starck always likes to mess with how we think about design, and the Louis Ghost Chair is no exception. The lines and style of this chair are taken from Louis XVI's armchair, however the use of polycarbonate has propelled this design into the post-modern era. Like the era of Louis XVI, this chair is now simply a ghost of the past. The Louis Ghost is sold by <a href="http://kartellstorela.com/shop/louis-ghost/">Kartell</a>.<br />

The Industrial Designer in me is always impressed that this is a single moulding. As well as being a very iconic design, this chair holds a special place in my heart because it was my first favourite chair once I begun studying.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8605933104703003021.post-58258076785769880852014-04-01T21:29:00.000+11:002014-04-01T21:29:06.903+11:00ICON // Eames Moulded Fiberglass/Plastic Chair (aka Eames Eiffel Chair)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
With a degree in Industrial Design, it is no wonder one of my loves is furniture design. I have decided to start a post series on iconic designs that shaped the world of furniture. To begin I thought I would start with my favourite designers, Charles and Ray Eames, and one of my favourite of their designs, the Eames Moulded Fiberglass/Plastic Chair, or more commonly called the Eames Eiffel Chair.<br />
<br />
<b>Design: </b>Eames Moulded Fiberglass/Plastic Chair<br />

<b>Year:</b> 1950<br />

<b>Country: </b>USA<br />
<br />
Husband and wife Industrial/Graphic Design powerhouse Charles and Ray Eames revolutionised furniture design and production in the 20th century. The Eames Moulded Fiberglass/Plastic Chair is one of their iconic designs.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
“The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” Charles Eames</div>
<br />
Originally the shell of this chair was moulded from fiberglass, however for environmental reasons has since changed to a polypropylene moulding. Different variations of the chair are available, both with and without armrests, and also as a rocking chair.<br />
<br />
Charles and Ray Eames have a strong connection with Herman Miller, through whom this chair is still avaliable.<br />

I went with <a href="http://www.hellotherehome.com/2012/11/diy-hanging-planters.html">this tutorial</a> and followed it exactly as it says. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.<br />

I'm very pleased with how they turned out. They were pretty easy to make but also relatively time consuming. Wrapping the coloured cotton around the top and the bottom of each one by far was the part that took the longest.<br />

As you are probably well aware these guys are back in fashion, and I am yet to decide whether or not to jump on the band wagon. But in the meantime I thought I would share a few different tutorials that are floating around out there in cyberspace. If any of these gravity defying planters tickle your tastebuds, clicking on the photo should take you to the respective tutorial.<br />

<br />
<br />
It's been a while but I'm glad to be back here blogging away about my creative little pursuits. I was inspired to undergo this project when my attention was brought to an old chair I picked up off the side of the road about a year ago. When I looked to evaluate whether it was worth keeping I noticed that it was actually in pretty good shape considering its kerbside-rescue-past. There weren't any joints loose, it wasn't wobbly and there were no major bumps or dents. Apart from being covered in dirt, dust and our dogs hair and the odd bit of flakey paint it wasn't going to take much to get this chair ready for some new paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLnbiGuz28-RYDBotGa_Q9f_LgccNPbFQYvWV5p2mbPcMHeX6oZxgtayTwf8dw0Vx3elwPOR91bqQ-JlXuWMjCrYv38kZmso02zCN90uaQB7Mv-A0AtKR2soqh7YdXlOuIRSO61b9wrCY/s1600/IMG_2042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLnbiGuz28-RYDBotGa_Q9f_LgccNPbFQYvWV5p2mbPcMHeX6oZxgtayTwf8dw0Vx3elwPOR91bqQ-JlXuWMjCrYv38kZmso02zCN90uaQB7Mv-A0AtKR2soqh7YdXlOuIRSO61b9wrCY/s1600/IMG_2042.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a bit of hand sanding and a hose down we were ready for paint. Having painted a chair similar to this about a year ago, I had discovered that spray paint seemed to give the best colour coverage and finish, and was a whole lot faster. So this time I headed straight to the spray paint section of my local Bunnings. I stood trying to choose a colour for quite a long time. Should I go for a bright colour to make a pop in my room? But I already have a bright yellow chair in my room. Maybe I should go for a light colour? Maybe dark? I also wanted to give the legs a 'dipped' effect to throw that into the mix. I ended up deciding that a darkish grey with metallic silver dipped legs would look good. I ended up going with a Medium Grey paint. I held off the metallic silver at this point incase I changed my mind.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Three coats and two days of trying to squeeze some painting in between rain later The chair was looking good and fresh. Time for the dip. Whilst rummaging around the spray paint in the garage I stumbled across a gold spray paint. At first I had been thinking silver, but now gold was looking like a nice option. After testing on a piece of paper, I concluded that it was metallic enough for what I wanted, saving a few dollars and a trip back to Bunnings. Next stop, taping up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I decided to have the gold go all the way up to the bottom of the higher two bars connecting the legs. I don't really know why, it just seemed visually like a good place to cut it off. It probably has something to do with the rule of thirds. I nervously pressed down on the nozzle, but as soon as the first bit of gold hit the chair I cheered for joy. It was so shinny! And so pretty!<br />
<br />

<br />
I was immediately so glad that I ended up going with gold instead of silver because I think the contrast between the two colours is delightful.<br />

Farewell from me for 2013! I hope you all have a very happy new year! Not only am I farewelling 2013, I am also leaving the country on friday until mid February. I don't expect I will have much opportunity to upload any posts here while I am exploring Spain, but you never know. If any of you are interested to see what I get up to I will have a travel blog <a href="https://spanuary.wordpress.com/">over here</a>. So, until we meet again, enjoy all of the pleasant things new years bring. </div>

This has meant that over the last few months I have had all these ideas stored away because all my time and creative energy was being used up by uni. That is until now. One of the ideas I have had stored away was to turn an old pair of op shop (which is a thrift store, my American friends) high waisted jeans into a denim skirt. This had the potential to go horribly wrong, but I didn't really have much to loose. Here is a little sneak peek of how it turned out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4szmHxjbeEfio8DVp7xjIwChRZi6I9qpvkaSpkxNf3QtR59_i82XxvG_nQfldmyz77WG3t-gFNwMn4ys8xiuzrEQM3f2I9rto4k11T229QhyphenhyphenbesPpBQmfhpS-oFklOncRPnHU4hqXDs/s1600/_DSC3843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4szmHxjbeEfio8DVp7xjIwChRZi6I9qpvkaSpkxNf3QtR59_i82XxvG_nQfldmyz77WG3t-gFNwMn4ys8xiuzrEQM3f2I9rto4k11T229QhyphenhyphenbesPpBQmfhpS-oFklOncRPnHU4hqXDs/s400/_DSC3843.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm pretty pleased with the results, but before we really delve into the finished product, here is how I got there. It all started at Salvo's with a $5 pair of jeans. The things I was looking for were not too expensive (I didn't really want to go over $5 in case I ended up just destroying them), high waisted, good quality denim and no wore out patches in at least the sections above the knee. The pair I ended up going with hadn't even been wore as they still had their original Miss Shop tag on them, however they looked a few decades old.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqDTAFQkiFXR7NJduWkGM4YbXSKyhdDmjGrljiwRdgVKmaWmO0n0wpLamxk84RSPOeDbiYHn_i2K12g4XZQBkSXW6uHgUT_UZzmxdFQl-n5iKtFepY5oZ2Gn3oMu9cmknG-bycTG3N03w/s1600/_DSC3836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqDTAFQkiFXR7NJduWkGM4YbXSKyhdDmjGrljiwRdgVKmaWmO0n0wpLamxk84RSPOeDbiYHn_i2K12g4XZQBkSXW6uHgUT_UZzmxdFQl-n5iKtFepY5oZ2Gn3oMu9cmknG-bycTG3N03w/s400/_DSC3836.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First up was cutting open the inner leg seam right up to the bottom of the fly. I added in a yellow dotted line in Photoshop so you can better see where I mean.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1O2_cbQd7TpLmBqJo8XGeApnVju1bRiJiIEIoll8qWynlqA9sQSPVoRdGVqyEzKGv0E7eOh6d8yTh_r15zjiJpzB1GNTDLGuBWl4Z-aNZ4qQ7deqMbLXZYw1qFV3_7X_FszciPq0o5KY/s1600/_DSC3837copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1O2_cbQd7TpLmBqJo8XGeApnVju1bRiJiIEIoll8qWynlqA9sQSPVoRdGVqyEzKGv0E7eOh6d8yTh_r15zjiJpzB1GNTDLGuBWl4Z-aNZ4qQ7deqMbLXZYw1qFV3_7X_FszciPq0o5KY/s400/_DSC3837copy.jpg" width="263" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then turned the whole thing inside out and pinned the front half of the legs together and the back half of the legs together. As you can see I made sure I pinned them in a straight line rather that following the curve of the pants because this extra fabric is to form the crotch of the pants, which are obviously not necessary for a skirt. Again the yellow line should hopefully make this clearer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvaal1kqJljhXheogQQmZPP7tJHmit-OGxuU2tizZaTOc41Jjz3eX0gBu59Qkhrb0yFd06ORThjHB4FAq6RnZMtwktxiKHm_zoxeyP3wET52rILPF0zk0k8qwsT8Ge6NWWp49ZZmj6GHY/s1600/_DSC3838copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvaal1kqJljhXheogQQmZPP7tJHmit-OGxuU2tizZaTOc41Jjz3eX0gBu59Qkhrb0yFd06ORThjHB4FAq6RnZMtwktxiKHm_zoxeyP3wET52rILPF0zk0k8qwsT8Ge6NWWp49ZZmj6GHY/s400/_DSC3838copy.jpg" width="263" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Next I just cut the pants off at the knees so it was less bulky for sewing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJIUK48XgJmkZjdwGBwa5aeFNh6xq7yoUIPnzymXTR0SZIGeWUxtD9t_tNTU3VHAOxkNonayOl_EScEWcbClB6WdoyZYSgVuWLhJrHx6M-dA7ziYnaK-VE-oSkRC_relzR9NY468Wvp7Y/s1600/_DSC3839.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJIUK48XgJmkZjdwGBwa5aeFNh6xq7yoUIPnzymXTR0SZIGeWUxtD9t_tNTU3VHAOxkNonayOl_EScEWcbClB6WdoyZYSgVuWLhJrHx6M-dA7ziYnaK-VE-oSkRC_relzR9NY468Wvp7Y/s400/_DSC3839.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
Next came the sewing. I simply just followed the line of pins I had. After this came the hem. Because the denim was really thick, I decided not to double roll the hem, but if you wanted to do it all properly you could do this. I stitched around the hem twice, leaving a 5mm gap between the two lines of stitching just to make it look more professional.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifCWoC5MFhi2G8dT9iBdGJK4mPiX6NLUi77Pu_9wodG4LpHrikAmeBLnoqQdSEETfzw4WzVtGyi_4Epe9KJPYn3bgZgepusWKGKwCGrKjld8ntQvKm-xehLyrsdqfiXnGmJkh8bBQ8oi8/s1600/_DSC3840copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifCWoC5MFhi2G8dT9iBdGJK4mPiX6NLUi77Pu_9wodG4LpHrikAmeBLnoqQdSEETfzw4WzVtGyi_4Epe9KJPYn3bgZgepusWKGKwCGrKjld8ntQvKm-xehLyrsdqfiXnGmJkh8bBQ8oi8/s400/_DSC3840copy.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
And then all of a sudden I had a denim skirt! I wasn't timing how long it took but it would have been less than an hour. So there is now one less idea sitting in the ideas bank, keep on the look out for some more little projects in the near future though as I continue to work my way through all my ideas.<br />

After a bit of mucking about practicing the basic stitches I thought I would tackle an actual project. After a quick search I found <a href="http://dabblesandbabbles.com/crochet-infinity-scarf/">this crochet pattern</a> for an infinity scarf which said it was good for beginners. Perfect. And as a bonus I love scarves, especially ones of the infinity variety. I just used some wool I had lying around. It was actually an 8 ply acrylic wool. It used up probably about a ball and a half in total. The pattern calls for a 6.5mm (for all you American folk US K10.5) crochet hook but the biggest I had was 5mm so I just used that.<br />

In total it took me about 4 nights to make, but it would probably take me less if I were to do it again as my crochet skills improved as I went. Now that I can claim crochet as a skill I have, I have gone a little crazy over on Pinterest looking at different crochet patterns. </div>

I now, however, have finished and thought that I would take myself to IKEA as a little celebration. There is nothing I love more than meandering through the display rooms soaking up all they different ways they have been decorated. This is basically me whenever I'm there minus the date (well more like being on a date with myself).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/TNEkwcY7OI0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Now I've got all (500) Days of Summer references out of the way I'll get on with sharing what treats I found along the way. First up a candlestick (the white one) I bought to keep another blue one I have company.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC01lW2PqiGvKwTLyqqHJbT2RapI5rV8vdq5AQaJErFQLk86q4oeLDSHgxzUcTJGHGFo3FzG3B9i4tzhylhQQkrWU6rc7RkG-xwma9E3ns_1kbpbUOU7RBb_zulYoOm_Q3K4_pgFPTzD8/s1600/_DSC3644.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC01lW2PqiGvKwTLyqqHJbT2RapI5rV8vdq5AQaJErFQLk86q4oeLDSHgxzUcTJGHGFo3FzG3B9i4tzhylhQQkrWU6rc7RkG-xwma9E3ns_1kbpbUOU7RBb_zulYoOm_Q3K4_pgFPTzD8/s400/_DSC3644.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't actually remember this little guys name, and now I can't find it on the IKEA website so you'll have to take my word on this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I found this glass bottle. It is a vase but I also though it would be pretty cool to use as a glass to drink from too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see he is sitting up with the paper flowers I made in <a href="http://theglassbelljar.blogspot.com.au/2013/10/happy-crafternoon-paper-flowers.html">this post</a>. His name is <a href="http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/90239907/">ENSIDIG</a> and he only set me back $1.49! How could I say no to that!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the back of my mind for a bit I have been thinking I would like to hang a white clock in my room, so when I saw this one I picked it up almost instantaneously. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZyFNt5GTsRnmggI9IfWTsEqHOkkk_BNhRMBzXUmIkIdYksigTu3aMAwHoiHticWbmpk2vMmBF3nVfQqdoP16DYX_C-khkxO8AgtEvJwr5LYDHfi9gxp1vzz3bn-p_RqzsfGVeNdCQ3A/s1600/_DSC3636.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZyFNt5GTsRnmggI9IfWTsEqHOkkk_BNhRMBzXUmIkIdYksigTu3aMAwHoiHticWbmpk2vMmBF3nVfQqdoP16DYX_C-khkxO8AgtEvJwr5LYDHfi9gxp1vzz3bn-p_RqzsfGVeNdCQ3A/s400/_DSC3636.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love very simple clocks so this one fit the bill perfectly. As you can see I have added it to a little collection of things on my wall I put up at the beginning of the year. I just love how the colour of my walls makes white really pop. This clocks name is <a href="http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/50232248/">VATTNA</a> and cost $14.99.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly I have been wanting some friends for the succulent I potted up in <a href="http://theglassbelljar.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/green-thumbs-and-dirty-nails.html">this post</a> a few months ago. On this IKEA trip I found what I was looking for. The one in the middle is the one I already had if you can't remember the post about it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGb2eVvo4xAEl54v80zecsOO-r6d3uEMO4Pi2P-yHFLUVAV6Df5n2KIcb6fqPnSw2-R6BAOBDV3UnM-goCpNwB0anpdFZ3YUwkzHiqFEMZaSRPk0PDlgdqeUVzydOgdcm8Ojk9TyjCfSM/s1600/_DSC3641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGb2eVvo4xAEl54v80zecsOO-r6d3uEMO4Pi2P-yHFLUVAV6Df5n2KIcb6fqPnSw2-R6BAOBDV3UnM-goCpNwB0anpdFZ3YUwkzHiqFEMZaSRPk0PDlgdqeUVzydOgdcm8Ojk9TyjCfSM/s400/_DSC3641.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will begin with the pots. Their name is <a href="http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/10169442/">SOCKER</a> and at the moment they are only $1.49 each (I think they are normally $1.99). The plants I also got from IKEA. I must have been hiding under a rock because I didn't even realise IKEA sold real plants. They are both just succulents (that is all that is specified about them) and they were both $6.99. To pot them up I followed the same process as in <a href="http://theglassbelljar.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/green-thumbs-and-dirty-nails.html">this post</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>Update on <a href="http://theglassbelljar.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/green-thumbs-and-dirty-nails.html">that post</a>. You may remember that this first succulent started life under the bell jar this blog derives it's name from, but it turns out this didn't work for two reasons. First, the bell jar ended up being too humid for my little leafy friend who much prefers hot, dry conditions. Secondly, the bell jar sits on my desk which did not get enough sunlight for this photosynthesising little guy. This resulted in him being moved onto my windowsill which solved both these problems.</i></div>

I had a bit of a crafternoon the other day with some lovely friends and one of the things we were keen to try out was making our own necklaces using polymer clay (quick apology, I only had my phone with me so sorry for the iPhone photos).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We ended up using Staedtler FIMO, which is an oven hardening modelling clay. We stood in Lincraft in front of their range of colours for quite some time trying to decide which to choose. I wanted to have a go at this with just one colour before committing to buying all the primary colours and experimenting with mixing (which does create some truly beautiful colours, I actually have to stop myself from trying to eat them). I ended up going for a colour called silver. This 56g little packet cost me $4.74.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9cPs9teYZS4zNRkxalthP_kRa4K4dqVxUoketSqWr87b-dWJprPH5NYUv-XVxwHNE-hWEmJUm3JybfC04QExzC-xaqomefsqoocDv2PplBgn352oZpXYRc3P0v5b8u4Bp02ineRc8hLU/s1600/IMG_1429.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9cPs9teYZS4zNRkxalthP_kRa4K4dqVxUoketSqWr87b-dWJprPH5NYUv-XVxwHNE-hWEmJUm3JybfC04QExzC-xaqomefsqoocDv2PplBgn352oZpXYRc3P0v5b8u4Bp02ineRc8hLU/s400/IMG_1429.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a pretty warm day so once I broke off a piece to start working with it didn't take very long for it to become very soft and malleable. I began by working the piece of clay into a sphere.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQjSDpjWlnK2x1PgR56NMUHKTf7-PWr6f_5AjXLTU0Pqb105rlcRxS9tDTSkkKuY9pDk2QZi3ZMo6SZZ5Ibi7mXvFt63fFzGL3mL7yTomwjezWoP40dFrZz3nk1m1DPVfwyr3_Z8oBuaw/s1600/IMG_1430.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQjSDpjWlnK2x1PgR56NMUHKTf7-PWr6f_5AjXLTU0Pqb105rlcRxS9tDTSkkKuY9pDk2QZi3ZMo6SZZ5Ibi7mXvFt63fFzGL3mL7yTomwjezWoP40dFrZz3nk1m1DPVfwyr3_Z8oBuaw/s400/IMG_1430.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then squished the sphere down into a cube.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvrJcquIyu5_Jl8Nk9wYNkEI7rNcthJ3YR4uYEJ3955R2xSgh3vwhKhDzsaEKTrYY5tNM7yiJNxqEfxH4bBOpXcvOGGpogtwlFDDoK95hS4exvBnPsynePAJwWW-SvK1c57Y98BNPa3VE/s1600/IMG_1431.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvrJcquIyu5_Jl8Nk9wYNkEI7rNcthJ3YR4uYEJ3955R2xSgh3vwhKhDzsaEKTrYY5tNM7yiJNxqEfxH4bBOpXcvOGGpogtwlFDDoK95hS4exvBnPsynePAJwWW-SvK1c57Y98BNPa3VE/s400/IMG_1431.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next came creating those lovely asymmetrical geometric faces. This is were things got a lot trickier than I was anticipating. I used a knife to slice of faces until I got to an overall shape I was happy with. I'm not going to lie, this took quite a few attempts, lucky the very nature of clay allows you to squish everything back together and start again. The main problem was that by the time I got to slicing off the last half of the faces, my fingers would dent and deform the work I had already done, destroying those crisp edges I was attempting to achieve. This is probably due to a lack of skill on my part, and also because it was such a warm day the clay really was very soft. Anyway, after a number of attempts I reached a shape I was happy with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVF2YDXKFb_aJMfXUuwmz8NAXJZDD0_kwGWU8J-fJrF6nbuRRCs4Lbo9J5C8Ej_Eptf3WBb1aiLcAhkfckAF74YdprmHd7o5m1UzYq5RpEh65KMDjqXGmejkanwyc8QBjwxzb726EAzVM/s1600/IMG_1434.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVF2YDXKFb_aJMfXUuwmz8NAXJZDD0_kwGWU8J-fJrF6nbuRRCs4Lbo9J5C8Ej_Eptf3WBb1aiLcAhkfckAF74YdprmHd7o5m1UzYq5RpEh65KMDjqXGmejkanwyc8QBjwxzb726EAzVM/s400/IMG_1434.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next comes poking a hole through the sides to turn this into a bead. At this stage I put the whole thing in the freezer for a few minutes to harden it up a bit so poking a hole through wouldn't end with me turning it into a squashed mess. I discovered that I should have put it in the freezer before I attempted to slice off the faces as this did a marvellous job of helping it hold its form better. Anyway, we used a crochet hook to poke the hole because that was slightly fatter than the chain we had to put through it later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMdafzbqcHkcw0mCHQH5yX72eIFu-EatTtFElRMBL3r4LbQ6JsH3qDAgpkMH-QyvxTBLqANhFgwfvBEtmzuqDXPQUGDD2UtwVXnvXY3lHEtarOk0aJKrJcTAJDKl2tKOjsA17O3VOHaq4/s1600/IMG_1435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMdafzbqcHkcw0mCHQH5yX72eIFu-EatTtFElRMBL3r4LbQ6JsH3qDAgpkMH-QyvxTBLqANhFgwfvBEtmzuqDXPQUGDD2UtwVXnvXY3lHEtarOk0aJKrJcTAJDKl2tKOjsA17O3VOHaq4/s400/IMG_1435.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put the hole almost in the middle, but slightly more towards the top so the bead would sit well on its chain. The chain I bought from Spotlight and only cost me $1.99 with my VIP card discount.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I love spring and how I can bring a little spring inside with a flower in a vase. They tend to end up dead however. This is were some crafty time and <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/229261437254272427/">this pin</a> come in. After a bit of time cutting and gluing I ended up with this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFGIjG3IhyvDFN6CYvaSPBhTzhEhGJQ52sSfyjw_Yr7keTGtpZZklNLNUYLQGhRN05As5XdSJrlfREcuLQu0imaTD8EP7Ev1iOma8n44iMcEeNAqz9Em9rBz8y7zeV26juEk3ScnUnoIY/s1600/_DSC3174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFGIjG3IhyvDFN6CYvaSPBhTzhEhGJQ52sSfyjw_Yr7keTGtpZZklNLNUYLQGhRN05As5XdSJrlfREcuLQu0imaTD8EP7Ev1iOma8n44iMcEeNAqz9Em9rBz8y7zeV26juEk3ScnUnoIY/s640/_DSC3174.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now spring can last forever. I followed the instructions from <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/229261437254272427/">that pin</a> I mentioned earlier exactly. I didn't have any yellow tissue paper like they used in the tutorial so I opted for blue instead. Even though it's less realistic it kind of ended up going well with my walls and that candle holder. I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out. They seem to make everything cheerful. </div>

<br />
<br />
I have my mums sewing machine out at the moment for some uni work, so I was thinking of something fun I could quickly create as a bit of a break. Whilst on Pinterest I had the idea of making a little note book. Here is what you'll need:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoEVy97se-YVLIAmW_DZGrU0z1E1XC7h5cbJnm7YIfBdGeWU6h65WlbFqdy9sb-q8Hxooyelq_vvP9_plL_aJJmBQ_XQI1LGOKMp9X9EqOls4LhKr4m1fwEsKkMJUUedMtnoURG6pbHVA/s1600/_DSC3144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoEVy97se-YVLIAmW_DZGrU0z1E1XC7h5cbJnm7YIfBdGeWU6h65WlbFqdy9sb-q8Hxooyelq_vvP9_plL_aJJmBQ_XQI1LGOKMp9X9EqOls4LhKr4m1fwEsKkMJUUedMtnoURG6pbHVA/s400/_DSC3144.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>a piece of card cut to the overall size you want the notebook to be. I had a blank card lying around so I just used that since it was already folded nicely for me.</li>
<li>paper to create pages. This can be any type of paper and any size, so long as it is larger or the same size as the piece of card. I used 4 A3 sheets of white 80 gsm copy paper.</li>
<li>pencil</li>
<li>scissors </li>
<li>cotton the colour you want the binding stitching (you will see this from the outside so make a pretty choice). I went for a bright orange.</li>
<li>any supplies you need to decorate the cover (I just used a 0.4 sharpie)</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first step is to cut the paper for the pages to the same size as the piece of card. I just lay the card itself over the paper and traced around it with a pencil. At this stage I made a lovely discovery that the piece of card I was using fit exactly 4 times on the piece of paper. This made this step very easy for me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimeQagpupv1GyBp0ey39x60tG9DygRuaJUonERAbbN0NP6y7WdX2yVQI_F4FQG8onfkoOcNs5FV4cOcJwGazd5qQ12NRgiwUj5YSqtdVfJNu4pBI9lQUR4loLYNsvQP96NHt0YiLp7cr8/s1600/_DSC3132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimeQagpupv1GyBp0ey39x60tG9DygRuaJUonERAbbN0NP6y7WdX2yVQI_F4FQG8onfkoOcNs5FV4cOcJwGazd5qQ12NRgiwUj5YSqtdVfJNu4pBI9lQUR4loLYNsvQP96NHt0YiLp7cr8/s400/_DSC3132.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(sorry for the white on white making things a little tricky to see)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once all the pages were cut to size it was time to sew them together. For this I used a machine, put if you don't have access to a machine I'm sure with some patience you could sew by hand, you would just have to take great care to go in a straight line. I went quite slowly to make sure I kept to a very straight line even with a machine. Since I was using a pre-folded card I just used the fold line as a guide as to where to sew. (note the sewing machine, my mum got that for her 21st birthday from her parents and it's still kicking on!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz-WIwB8UgMLcSI7LvdC6290slCNdS61WYfzHaV7WL05UI_lTFuCbsZOijCkm5-kiVWAFe86MBWQhA81orfGvsQeUkxZDj8FmcK_H0xJxlwIzJ8Lqg2gYgLMMM35aDB2H5NTzH33joHGw/s1600/_DSC3139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz-WIwB8UgMLcSI7LvdC6290slCNdS61WYfzHaV7WL05UI_lTFuCbsZOijCkm5-kiVWAFe86MBWQhA81orfGvsQeUkxZDj8FmcK_H0xJxlwIzJ8Lqg2gYgLMMM35aDB2H5NTzH33joHGw/s400/_DSC3139.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once it is all stitched down the middle just fold it along that line (again having a pre-folded card made this a lot easier). It should look something like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQv_AOIHP1aNy-aY7fEFpWYagWvcm9TR6-fGzn7mdjBnwVYNKQurFg-wuXxYS13eYQVEttt_o74A9QPxbEh5f0xa-Sj-6oZBfCDLsOiGF2bhF8j_2HNv9KG7Myx5h3ai3hLuGo5R2HGw/s1600/_DSC3142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQv_AOIHP1aNy-aY7fEFpWYagWvcm9TR6-fGzn7mdjBnwVYNKQurFg-wuXxYS13eYQVEttt_o74A9QPxbEh5f0xa-Sj-6oZBfCDLsOiGF2bhF8j_2HNv9KG7Myx5h3ai3hLuGo5R2HGw/s400/_DSC3142.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(see how my fingers are holding it down? It will keep wanting to spring open for a bit so I recommend putting something heavy on top for it for a bit to help the fold settle down.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now comes the creative part! You have a plain little notebook now so go crazy with your creativity! You may have already used a decorative or coloured piece of card which would mean you're done now (or just want a plain notebook). If you are struggling here are some ideas for designs I've pinned <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/229261437252347489/">here</a> and <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/229261437253741963/">here</a> or even <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/229261437253748826/">here</a>. As you can see I have used one of the ideas from the first link.</div>

Spring has sprung so I thought it was probably succulent time! I eventually did make it out to pick up some succulents for my <a href="http://theglassbelljar.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/the-glass-bell-jar.html">bell jar</a> so I can turn it into a little mini terrarium of sorts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1VxNz5Huc-41VIS_itUu_jfMaBgSX-fsHuYp9BiXhl4ErzYWZCQW8uG5Bm0cqGbiIXkRGzT8WNWYSDl3Qchd4aAcc2aJAHAnAe1G4xm5jsfl21jCQQ8niHobHuh3x21hmi4MGyEn1opw/s1600/_DSC3128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1VxNz5Huc-41VIS_itUu_jfMaBgSX-fsHuYp9BiXhl4ErzYWZCQW8uG5Bm0cqGbiIXkRGzT8WNWYSDl3Qchd4aAcc2aJAHAnAe1G4xm5jsfl21jCQQ8niHobHuh3x21hmi4MGyEn1opw/s400/_DSC3128.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I haven't ever grown succulents before so I wanted to read about how I could go about not killing them. I found a great tutorial on <a href="http://www.elleandish.com/2011/04/17/how-to-easy-succulent-container-gardening/">Ell & Ish </a> which was especially relevant because I was using a pot with no drainage holes. I wanted to make sure my little chunky leaved plants didn't rot their roots.<br />
<br />
The succulents are a little cluster of three White Nun's which I picked up for $6 from Bunnings. The pot I found at my new favourite place, Salvos, for $4. Its ceramic and has little cacti around it which is a bit odd but somehow not the worst thing in the world. <br />
<br />

After hearing good things about the amount of furniture they have I was getting very excited. Yesterday I finally made it. I didn't come out with any furniture, but I did pick up this vase for $6.<br />

I haven't made up my mind about the colour yet, this photo doesn't really convey it but its peachy salmon. I might end up spray painting it but for the time being it is keeping a candlestick I bought from a secondhand furniture place a number of months back company.</div>

I went to Kmart to see their new home-wares section and I spotted a bell jar for $7. I couldn't not buy it. So many possibilities ran through my head of little treasures that could sit inside. I had been thinking about blogging for a while now, having always loved every minute I've spent on blogs like <a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/">Young House Love</a>, <a href="http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com.au/">How About Orange</a> and <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/">Apartment Therapy</a>. When I got home from Kmart I decided to jump right in. So here we are.<br />
<br />
My blog needed a name. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the box my bell jar had come in sitting there. Now my blog had a name. But what happened to the actual bell jar? Well I would love to use it as a terrarium for some succulents at some stage (<a href="http://img1.etsystatic.com/012/0/6590145/il_fullxfull.456508103_s176.jpg?ref=l2">something like this</a>), but I don't have any succulents lying around the house so for now I just have it sitting on my desk with a few bits and pieces I had. So there we have it. The story of the glass bell jar, the blog and the fancy glass now sitting on my desk.<br />
